Nothing Left

I have a confession, Dad.
What to say?

I want to be the hero
you will not need
to meet the eyes that won't understand
to reveal the secret
and turn the key to you

But how do I explain?
How do I sum it all up?

How your shadow fills me
alone in the dark
on those cold mornings
when I light the family fires

When I face ingratitude
When I lose control
When I see blue-black steel

I tried to explain
and give it to you as a gift
but I left us drowning in a somber sea

Words always fail me
and I wind up spinning pinwheels
when I wish to move the stars

So your life will speak for itself
and does not need me after all

And will be misunderstood
and wrongfully judged
and hailed
and missed

And at that moment that I dread the most
Leave me
with nothing left to say

Another great one. I especially love the lines

"Words always fail me
and I wind up spinning pinwheels
when I wish to move the stars"

Sweet imagery. Good stuff!

Hey Uncle Tom!
Ok I'm offically commenting as requested so remember our deal you actually have to look at my stuff to! I think this one is rally sad especially since I know the story behind you telling it to Grandad. But it is also really powerful and great. You have an amazing gift! I copy and pasted it into word so i can print it out for Grandad. I'm going to look for a hand picture to print it on, and I thought I'd print it on card stock to. would you like me to frame it or simply give it to him? Hope to hear from you soon!
Your "favorite" niece :)

I've talked about this one ad nauseum already, but thought I'd leave an official approval. I love it, as you know. I even have a commemorative pinwheel in my home office to remind me that sometimes the pinwheels at least shine a little.
